For many years we have associated grey hair with men and women of a certain age, or those who chose to wear their hair ‘eau naturelle’. Yet recently women that are choosing to wear grey hair look classy, trendy and beautiful.
As you get older your complexion gets lighter and dyeing your hair can actually start to age you, especially if you are wearing a block colour (one colour all over) rather than having some lighter colours scattered through! Also your wrinkles show up less against a lighter background!
Over the past few years it has become increasingly trendy to colour your hair grey even with a slight blue tinge to it, what would have been called a ‘blue rinse!’, which my Grandma had has now become a craze!
Maintenance
So how do we maintain our natural ‘grey’ hair. Natural elements can cause discolouring and yellowing, as can nicotine, so if this occurs then I suggest using a shampoo which takes out the yellow tinges. A silver shampoo enhances the grey, using amino acids to maintain the shine and purity leaving your hair feeling luxurious. The bluer/violet the hue you require the longer you need to leave the shampoo on! (do watch it they work!!). These can be used on natural or ‘grey’ coloured hair as a weekly maintenance.
How To Go Natural
Many of us struggle to let go of the bottle and I have heard the term ‘give in’ to the grey being used! It can be difficult to go ‘cold turkey’ and let it all grow out, having to put up with a band of dark hair and a ‘halo’ of silver is off-putting, if you don’t feel this approach is for you can opt for asking your hairdresser to lighten the overall tone of your coloured hair with a bleach shampoo, following this with a mixture of highlights and lowlights can ease the transition into the world of silver surfers! Although this way your roots will be mixed in with other colours and won’t be as noticeable.

Celebrities
Philip Schofield (@Schofe) started to go grey at sixteen years old. Initially battling against it by dying it a chestnut brown until he reached forty, but after encouragement from Holly Willoughby (@hollywills) he let the silver shine through and although he has admitted he doesn’t like ageing and is open to surgery to stay young, his silver locks suit him!
Helen Mirren is an amazing example of a woman who looks radiant with grey hair, her skin glows and suits the tone of her hair, a beautiful young ‘older’ woman! Nicole Kidman looks amazing ditching her normal blonde locks for her recent role in SundanceTV’s Top of the Lake: China Girl in Sydney, Australia.
