Sharon Stone Talks Basic Instincts at 61 – Why We Love Her Attitude

At 61, Sharon Stone is still oozing sexiness. Her photo shoot in the May issue of Vogue Portugal is a reminder to everyone that she is still the icon that she was all those years ago when she made crossing your legs the ultimate sexy move in Basic Instinct. However, it’s her attitude to ageing that we love so much and that is so much of what makes her truly sexy in midlife.

In her interview with Vogue, she was asked how it felt being a sex symbol. But she answers that she has never felt like one. In fact, when she first started out in Hollywood she was told that she wasn’t employable because she wasn’t “f*ckable”. In response, she played the system, organizing sexy photo shoots and working to make people see her as “f*ckable”. So, she has never really felt like she was a sex symbol. She was savvy and gave the industry what they wanted from her so that in time she could show them that she was so much more.

She is undoubtedly a very smart woman. Getting a scholarship to a university when she was only 15, she was considered a child prodigy. Although she dropped out of education to pursue her acting career, she went back to school at 58! She believed she could do anything she put her mind too, so she did. What an inspiration to us all that its never too late to achieve something monumental.

Sharon Stone and The Ageing Process

Her attitude toward ageing is also inspirational. She knows that she is sexy, but that it comes from within. She encourages people to take a look at themselves as they age, and really come to love and accept each part of the ageing process.

“People are afraid of changing; that they’re losing something. They don’t understand that they are also gaining something. (…) I think that in the art of ageing well there’s this sexuality to having those imperfections. It’s sensual.”

Of course, you might think it’s easy for Sharon Stone to feel sexy, I mean look at her! However, she admits there was a point in her 40’s that she really struggled with accepting her body. So she locked herself in her bathroom with a bottle of wine, saying to herself that she would come out “until I can totally accept the way that I look right now.” She said she examined her body in a magnifying mirror and cried and cried. But the turning point came when she said to herself “You’re going to get old now. How do you want to do that?”. Instead of getting upset at her inevitable ageing she took control of how looked and thought about herself.

Her Vogue pictures show that sexiness knows no age, but her interview showed us that her sexiness comes from her attitude, her mind and the way she approaches the inevitability of ageing. We can’t help but be inspired by it!
