Professional Hair Products – Myth or Magic

By Tracey Leslie

So for many years we have seen all the amazing advertisements that grace our TV/radio/magazines and now social media promoting the likes of Pantene, L’Oreal, Aussie Miracle, TREseme, Head & Shoulders and many more…

Do we buy from the supermarket’s own brand when we are doing our weekly shopping, or do we reach for the ‘buy one get one free’ of the advertised brands? Then there is the dilemma of picking up the recommended professional shampoo while in the hair salon having our hair done or do we note down their recommendations and come home and buy from an online shop like LookFantastic or GorgeousShop?

Is there a difference from using a cheaper supermarket own brand shampoo against a more expensive Professional shampoo? Especially now that most of the ‘Professionals’ have created products that are available in the supermarkets/large chain chemists.

Obviously, there is the amount of shampoo you need to use, a thumbnail of the professional shampoo will do the job, it doesn’t even have to lather (that’s a myth), over the ‘slap it on’ big bubbles cheaper brands!

Then there is the cost to consider, most people who wash their hair daily probably won’t want to spend £14.50 on a bottle of shampoo, but after buying cheaper brands that suited the two men in my life (hubby & son), and as a professional hairstylist, I’ve had the pick of the bunch at my fingertips and have tried many, I’ve recently opted to buy Redken Extreme shampoo, as I have just coloured my hair and then will combine with Redken’s High Rise Volume Lifting Shampoo to give it more body!  I must say there is a difference already and I will continue to go the professional route.

What made me decide? Well, I have fine hair and have always avoided overly heavy shampoo. The shampoo that leaves you needing to wash your hair after a couple of hours and leaves you with shiny fluffy hair that you can do nothing with! Over the years I have used lots of lightweight shampoo’s but have gone back to Redken high rise volume lifting shampoo, which does what it says on the tin!
